Joseph started racing Jr. Dragsters
in 2004 at the age of 8. His first car was purchased in 2003 and he
worked on it with his Dad to get it race ready for his birthday. A
special thanks to Mark and Kelly Jones for helping us teach Joseph the
ropes of racing. Some kids respond better to lessons from someone other
than their parents. Too bad there’s no driving school for Jr. Dragster
newbies…there’s an idea!
Joseph’s first motor would only allow him to race at modest speeds of 50
mph (about 13.20's E.T.) in the 1/8th mile. Could have been because his
Dad put his clutch on backwards, but that was fast enough for his Mom,
but it wasn't long before his eagerness (and nagging) resulted in the
purchases of newer, faster motors. By the end of 2004, he was on his 3rd
motor. I lost count of all the updates over the years. Seems like every
time I turn around, there’s something different on his car.
We have a blast racing together and have met wonderful friends along the
way. We all meet up at the racing events and camp overnight whenever
possible. The atmosphere at some tracks is family oriented and the kids
enjoy running around, playing and roasting marshmallows when campfires
are allowed. Gulfport Dragway happens to be a favorite of ours because
of the overall camping setting. The track officials are great and they
love to watch and prompt Jr. Dragster racing.
Joseph has won numerous trophies and plaques for racing events as well
as car shows over the years. We’re looking forward to many more racing
years. Who knows where this will lead Joseph when he is older, but until
then, we will have enjoyed all the family time together as a team.
